KODEN is a place where you can experience the beauty of fermentation culture and the essence of Japanese sake with all five senses — in the rich natural surroundings of Tamba, a land steeped in history and tradition.
Founded in 1849, Nishiyama Sake Brewery renovated one of its former brewery buildings to create KODEN — a space that brings the spirit of fermentation and sake craftsmanship to life.
Opened in August 2024, KODEN was born from a desire to pass down traditions and skills to future generations, and to give back to the land of Tamba that has long supported and nurtured us.

Tamba

— A Unique Land of Nature and Tradition
Tamba City in Hyogo Prefecture is located at Japan's lowest watershed, a point where warm and cold currents meet. From autumn to winter, the stark temperature difference between morning and evening creates a mystical morning mist, blanketing the landscape in a dreamlike haze. It's within this ethereal scenery that our brewers have long continued their sake-making tradition. Tamba is also the home of the Tamba-Toji, one of Japan's three major groups of master sake brewers. Their exceptional skills and wisdom have been passed down through generations. This rich natural environment supports a diverse array of plants, animals, and abundant crops. The area is also famous for Tamba-yaki, a style of traditional pottery with a history stretching back to the Heian period, nearly 1,000 years ago. Its warm, reddish clay and unique colors, which are formed during firing, make these works of art both beautiful and practical.
